Morro Strand Beach in Cayucos is one of the few beaches in San Luis Obispo County where dogs are actually welcome to spend the day. You’ll get great views of Morro Rock from the sand, and your dog can run around on leash while you’re there. The beach has real restrooms instead of just porta-potties, which makes a big difference when you’re spending several hours by the water.
The Lions Club has set up Mutt Mitts stations at the beach, so cleanup is straightforward—you won’t be hunting around for waste bags or leaving a mess behind. There are also a few picnic tables scattered around, so you can grab lunch and sit with your dog without worrying about finding shade or a place to settle. Since dogs need to stay leashed, it’s more of a controlled environment than a free-for-all dog beach, but that also means you’re less likely to deal with aggressive off-leash dogs running up to yours.
The beach itself has the typical California coast setup—sandy areas near the water and rockier sections toward the edges. Wave conditions vary, but this isn’t a particularly protected cove, so check conditions before you go if your dog is sensitive to rough water or strong currents. The parking area is right there, and it’s straightforward to access from Highway 1 through Cayucos.
Morro Strand works best if you want a beach day that’s dog-friendly without being a dedicated dog beach. You’ll see families, surfers, and other beachgoers alongside dog owners, so it’s a regular community beach with a dog policy instead of a dog-centric destination. The picnic tables and real facilities mean you can actually spend a full afternoon there comfortably with your dog, not just a quick trip.
