The Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoias is a 1540 acre tract in the Sierra National Forest containing 106 mature giant sequoias intermingled in a forest of second growth pine, fir and incense cedar. Located in the center of the sequoia range, south of Yosemite National Park, the grove has been managed as a historical site, preserving the uniqueness and historical significance of these massive trees. It’s a quieter alternative to the more crowded groves you’ll find in the valley itself.

The most accessible option is the one-mile self-guiding interpretive walk along The Shadow of the Giants National Recreation Trail, located in the southwest corner of the grove. It’s an easy loop that gives you a real sense of scale when you’re walking among these ancient giants. The interpretive markers explain what you’re looking at, which helps you appreciate just how old and remarkable these trees are.

If you and your dog are up for more hiking, the three-mile trail from the campground takes you to the Graveyard of the Giants—a sobering but fascinating spot where a small grove of large sequoias were killed by wildfire. You can see how nature recycles itself, with new growth emerging from the deadfall. Nearby, you’ll find a group known as “Granddad and the Kids”—an isolated mature sequoia with one massive branch stretching out like a protective arm, sheltering several younger sequoias growing beneath it. It’s the kind of thing that makes you stop and really look.

Dogs need to stay on leash throughout the grove, and you’ll need to clean up after yours. There are toilets at the beginning of the main trail, so plan accordingly if you’re doing one of the longer hikes. The forest here feels different from the valley—less crowded, more contemplative—and your dog will appreciate the shade and the forest floor under their paws.
