Northwood Restaurant (Bistro)

19400 California 116, Monte Rio, California 95462

(707) 865-2454

Northwood Bistro sits right on Highway 116 in Monte Rio with a wraparound patio that catches the Russian River valley breeze—the kind of place where you can watch traffic ease by while your dog settles under the table. The patio wraps around the building with both covered and open sections, so there’s shelter when the coastal fog rolls in, and sun when it clears. Inside, the dining room stays dog-free, but the patio is genuinely dog-welcoming, with enough tables spaced out that you don’t feel cramped with other diners and their pets.

The kitchen does California bistro food—seasonal vegetables, house-made pasta, locally sourced meat—and while your dog won’t be ordering off the menu, staff regularly bring water bowls without asking. The wine list leans into Sonoma County producers, which matters if you’re settling in for a long meal. Dogs stay on the patio throughout, and the space is casual enough that a dog lying on concrete or grass beside your table reads as completely normal.

Northwood gets busy on weekends, especially during summer and fall when the river draws visitors. Seating is first-come, first-served, so arriving before 6 p.m. or after 8:30 p.m. usually means shorter waits. The patio’s location right on the highway means some road noise, but the river’s only a few blocks away if you want to stretch your dog’s legs before or after eating. Sunset here happens fast in the redwoods, so come earlier than you think if you want light. The restaurant closes between lunch and dinner service on weekdays, so call ahead if you’re planning a mid-afternoon stop.
