Oak Canyon Dog Park

5600 Hollytree Dr, Oak Park, California

Oak Canyon Dog Park sits at the edge of Oak Park’s suburban sprawl, where the landscape shifts abruptly from residential streets to chaparral-covered hills. The park’s main draw is its network of actual hiking trails rather than a flat fenced enclosure—dogs run through genuine canyon terrain with native oak and sycamore scattered across dusty fire roads and narrower paths. The elevation climbs steadily but never aggressively, gaining roughly 300 feet over a mile-and-a-half loop that most dogs handle without complaint.

Dogs must be leashed on the perimeter roads and parking area but can run free once on the trail system. The park is open to off-leash dogs during designated hours, though enforcement and crowd management depend heavily on time of day. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, with fewer dogs and more manageable trail conditions. Weekends draw clusters of owners, particularly in fall and winter when Southern California temperatures finally drop. There’s no entry fee, which means the trails sometimes feel more crowded than other regional options.

Water sources are limited to a single faucet near the parking area—bring extra in your pack for longer outings, especially in summer when the exposed chaparral offers almost no shade. The trails themselves are mostly unshaded except under the oaks in the canyon bottom. The terrain is mostly hard-packed dirt and loose rock; paw pads can get tender in summer heat or after heavy rain when the ground turns slick. The main loop takes about 45 minutes for a moderate pace. A smaller spur heads deeper into the canyon if you want more mileage. Parking fills quickly on weekend mornings, with overflow along Hollytree Drive. Arrive before 9 a.m. on Saturdays if you want a spot near the trailhead.
