Parsons Landing is a remote, beachside campground located seven miles west of the village of Two Harbors on Catalina Island and is best suited for experienced, well-prepared campers traveling with dogs. The campground has eight primitive sites, each accommodating up to eight people, and access requires real effort: a strenuous 6.7-mile hike via the Silver Peak Trail, a longer 7.7-mile walk along West End Road, or a 4.25-mile paddle by kayak from Two Harbors. Kayaks can be rented from the Two Harbors Dive Shop.
Parsons Landing is also a designated stop on the 38.5-mile Trans-Catalina Trail, making it a popular choice for backpackers tackling longer island routes with leashed dogs. The trail itself offers dramatic coastal views and relatively consistent terrain once you commit to the journey, though the final stretch down to the beach can be steep and loose underfoot.
Because there is no potable water on site, campers can pre-order supply lockers stocked with firewood, a fire starter, and a two-gallon water jug by calling Two Harbors Visitor Services. Locker keys must be picked up before starting the hike, so plan your logistics carefully. The lack of infrastructure means you’re truly roughing it—there are no restroom facilities, no shade structures, and minimal protection from the elements.
When camping here with your dog, plan meticulously. Carry extra water—at least one gallon per person per day, plus additional for your dog. The exposed beach setting means intense sun exposure and wind, with limited natural shade. Dogs need booties or paw protection from hot sand and rocks, and you’ll want to bring additional supplies for their comfort. This isn’t a casual camping spot; it’s for people who know what they’re doing and want genuine isolation. Call Two Harbors Visitor Services well in advance to reserve your locker and confirm current conditions on the trails.
