Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campground

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campground

Reserve six months before your preferred date to secure a site nestled in the pines and redwoods at this ideally located campground in Big Sur. The 1,000-acre park has more than 200 sites, some snugged against the Big Sur River. Showers and flush toilets are provided, and there's ample room to walk your dog even without going on dog-restricted trails.

And fear not: Hundreds of miles of trails in the neighboring Ventana Wilderness are dog-friendly, as is glorious Pfeiffer Beach a few miles away.

Rates at this popular staging ground for Big Sur explorations vary and are among the highest in the state; expect to pay about $35 per night for a tent-only site.

• Dogs must be on a leash at all times
