The Point Defiance Trail in Penn Valley starts at the north side of the Bridgeport Covered Bridge and curves along the river for a mile before reaching Point Defiance, where the water flows into Lake Englebright. It’s a gentle loop with a well-maintained path that works for dogs of any size or fitness level.

The terrain here feels manageable but still interesting—you’ll walk through shaded forest sections that open into meadows where your dog can move more freely. The real appeal for dogs, though, are the gravel bars dotted along the riverbank. On warm days, these become natural wading spots where your dog can splash through shallow water to cool off. It’s the kind of relief that makes the difference on a longer hike.

Wildlife is active in this area, so keep your eyes up and around—your dog will definitely notice deer and other creatures before you do. The scenery shifts enough that the mile to the point feels varied rather than repetitive, with views that open up as you approach the lake.

If you want to turn this into an overnight trip, there’s a group campsite accessible by boat or hiking that sits right at the point. It’s a quieter option than many developed campgrounds, and managing it locally means they understand what works for dogs on multi-day trips. You’d want to bring your own water and supplies since the trail itself doesn’t have established amenities or water sources along the way.

The Gold Country landscape here is genuinely pretty without feeling overdone or crowded, especially if you go on a weekday. Spring and early fall are probably your best bets for temperature and trail conditions. The whole setup assumes you’re actually prepared to be out there—bring more water than you think you’ll need, especially for your dog, and plan accordingly rather than expecting conveniences along the way.
