Poplar Beach in Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County, along the California Coast, offers a serene escape for beach-loving dog owners. Visitors can take a steep trail down to Poplar Beach, where they will find a stretch of open coastline. The beach allows dogs on-leash, making it a great spot for a walk while enjoying the sound of waves crashing against the shore. The expansive shoreline provides ample space for dogs to explore on leash, ensuring a rewarding outing for both pets and their owners.

Located in picturesque Half Moon Bay, Poplar Beach is a popular destination for those looking to relax and enjoy the coast with their dogs. The dog-friendly policy lets pet owners take in the stunning coastal views without leaving their dogs behind. Poplar Beach offers a calm setting for a day of outdoor enjoyment.

What makes Poplar Beach especially appealing for dog owners is that while most Coastside beaches prohibit dogs, Poplar Beach welcomes them. Dogs must be kept on a leash with a maximum length of six feet, and owners are expected to pick up after their pets. Horses are also welcome here, so don’t be surprised if you share the sand with equestrian visitors. The beach is operated by the City of Half Moon Bay and the County of San Mateo, rather than California State Parks, which is why the pet-friendly rules differ from neighboring beaches.

Access to the beach is from the large paved parking lot at the end of Poplar Street near the edge of the bluff. Admission to the beach is free, though there is a fee for parking that can be paid at a self-serve kiosk accepting credit and debit cards. The lot includes designated spaces for trucks with horse trailers and can accommodate larger vehicles like motorhomes. Parking is limited to sunrise through sunset per city municipal code. From the lot, you will need to hike a steep trail down the bluff to reach the sand, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

The paved Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail runs along the top of the bluff in both directions from the parking lot, connecting Poplar Beach to Half Moon Bay State Beach and offering gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and even the famous Mavericks surfing location to the north. This flat, paved path is ideal for walking, running, or biking with your leashed dog. The Poplar Beach Trail itself covers about 1.5 miles with minimal elevation gain, making it an easy and enjoyable outing. Amenities at the parking area include portable restrooms and plenty of benches scattered along the ocean-facing side of the park where you can sit and take in the sea views with your dog at your side.
