Pure Grain Bakery sits in Vacaville with a pleasant patio where you can enjoy fresh pastries and drinks alongside your dog. The bakery’s story goes back to two friends from a small town near Saarbrucken, Germany—Michael and Holger Seibert—who met in high school and later worked as apprentices in Seibert’s father’s bakery. After completing their apprenticeships and earning bachelor’s degrees, they pursued Master’s degrees in business, setting themselves up for something bigger.
In 1989, while visiting California, Miethe got the idea to open a German-style bakery in the States. He zeroed in on Vacaville specifically because of the large European population drawn to the area by nearby Travis Air Force Base. Once he pitched the idea to his business partner back in Germany, the planning began in earnest. Seibert eventually relocated his wife and three children across the Atlantic to join Miethe, who had already moved to town a few months earlier. With help from local figures like Kathrine Feldman and the late Glen Miller of Glen Miller Real Estate, the doors opened in spring of 1991.
From the start, Pure Grain delivered quality German baked goods. The operation grew steadily, and today the bakery supplies everything from small corner cafes to university campuses across the region. That sustained success comes down to the people involved—the dedicated team behind the counter and the loyal customers who keep coming back.
The patio is a comfortable spot to sit with your dog while you sample whatever’s fresh that day. The breads and pastries reflect that original German training and commitment to doing things right. It’s the kind of place where you can tell the owners actually care about what they’re making, which shows in every bite.
