Robinson Creek Trail to Barney

13425 Twin Lakes Rd., Bridgeport, California 93517

The Robinson Creek Trail to Barney is a moderately strenuous 7.8-mile trek through some of California’s most dramatic terrain, and it’s one where your dog will stay engaged the entire way. The trail meanders along the rust-colored banks of Robinson Creek, leading to Barney Lake, which sits surrounded by steep, rugged granite formations. You’ll gain 1,100 feet in elevation, mostly concentrated in the final stretch, and that effort pays off with views that really do stop you in your tracks.

The landscape shifts as you climb—wildflowers and lush forest give way to those exposed granite faces, and the creek water stays crystal-clear throughout. Dogs handle this trail well if they’re used to moderate climbing, though you’ll want them leashed or under reliable voice control since wildlife does frequent this area. Other hikers also appreciate having dogs managed, as not everyone wants company on the trail.

Getting there requires a bit of navigation. The trailhead sits at the end of Twin Lakes Road, which branches off Highway 395. You’ll pass through Mono Village, a private campground, where you can park for a fee near the actual trailhead. It’s a small extra hassle but worth it for access to this section of the Sierra.

Robinson Creek Campground is just 9.3 miles from Bridgeport if you want to make this an overnight trip. Dogs are welcome there, which makes it a logical place to base yourself before or after the hike. The campground has the no-frills appeal of most high-country spots—basic but functional.

Pack significantly more water than you think you’ll need. The exposed sections offer almost no shade, and both you and your dog will drink faster than on shaded trails. Bring snacks to maintain energy for that final elevation push. The payoff at Barney Lake—sitting there with your dog after real effort—makes the whole thing worthwhile.
