Rocky Rest Campground

Hwy 49, Downieville, California

(530) 288-3231

Rocky Rest Campground in Downieville, Sierra County, sits right above the North Yuba River along Highway 49, and it’s genuinely one of the better spots in the Sierra if you want to camp with your dog and actually get outside. The location puts you steps away from the North Yuba Trailhead, which opens up a whole network of hiking trails through dense forest and along streams. The trails vary in difficulty, so you’re not locked into anything too ambitious if you just want an easy morning walk.

The river itself is the real draw here. There’s a charming bridge that crosses the Yuba, and it’s the kind of place where you’ll actually want to spend time walking around—the water’s constant sound and the forest closing in on both sides makes it feel genuinely removed from everything. On hot days, the rocky beach and swimming hole downstream are perfect if your dog enjoys water. It’s shallow enough in spots that you can both cool off without it turning into an ordeal.

The campground itself has picnic areas and fire pits, so you can set up a proper camp rather than just sleeping in your vehicle. It’s the kind of place where you’ll run into other people camping with dogs, which usually means friendly conversations around the fire. Downieville itself is a small historic town, so you’re not exactly isolated, but you’re far enough away that it genuinely feels like being in the mountains.

One thing to keep in mind: dogs need to be leashed at all times, which makes sense given the river proximity and other campers around. It’s worth calling ahead about current pet policies and whether they have any seasonal restrictions, since mountain campgrounds sometimes have weird rules about when animals can stay.
