Salmon Creek Trail

Salmon Creek Trail

Big Sur, Big Sur, California 93920

The Salmon Creek Trail runs 5 miles through the Silver Peak Wilderness in Big Sur, connecting Highway 1 to the South Coast Ridge Road along Monterey County‘s rugged coastline. This route gives you real flexibility—you can hike as far as you want and turn back whenever, which is especially nice if you’re figuring out how your dog handles longer distances.

The landscape shifts as you move up the trail. You’ll walk through redwood groves with the sound of Salmon Creek running alongside, and the canopy provides good shade on warmer days. Most people stop around the 2-mile mark at the Spruce, a natural spot to rest and let your dog catch their breath before deciding whether to continue or head back.

The trail itself is well-maintained and not technically difficult, which makes it accessible whether you’re training a young dog for longer hikes or just want a moderate outing. The biggest consideration is that dogs need to stay leashed the entire way—not just a suggestion, but important for protecting the wildlife in the Silver Peak Wilderness and keeping your dog safe around the creek and uneven terrain.

Parking is at the Highway 1 trailhead, where you’ll find a small pullout. It gets busy on weekends, especially during summer and fall when Big Sur weather is most reliable. Early morning is usually your best bet for finding space and avoiding crowds on the trail itself.

Bring more water than you think you’ll need, particularly for your dog. The creek is nearby, but it’s not always convenient for stopping, and you don’t want to rely on it as your water source. The elevation gain is gradual but steady, so even though it’s only 5 miles, it’s more of a workout than a casual stroll.

If you’re planning to do the full out-and-back distance, aim to start early and give yourself at least four hours total.
