The San Francisco Petaluma KOA sits on 70 acres in rural Sonoma County, about 34 freeway miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. This sprawling campground has 312 sites ranging from traditional tent spots to full-service RV lodges, making it easy to find an option that works for your setup and your dog.

The main draw for traveling with a dog is the 4,000 square-foot off-leash dog park. It’s fenced, so your dog can run around without a leash while you watch from the shade. There’s also a complete agility course on the property if your dog enjoys obstacles and climbing—it’s a good way to burn energy on days when you’re hanging around camp rather than exploring. The lodge accommodations are set up to welcome dogs, so you won’t feel like you’re cramming a dog into a space that wasn’t made for them.

Location-wise, you’re positioned well to reach several areas. Napa and Sonoma wineries are close by, which matters if you’re planning days away from camp. The redwoods aren’t far, and you can get to coastal beaches without too much driving. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and Sonoma Raceway are nearby if those appeal to your group. From May through October, the campground runs guided bus tours to San Francisco—useful if you want to see the city without wrestling with parking.

The campground keeps things active during summer with a recreation program, an inflatable waterslide, pool and spa, playground, karaoke nights, hay rides, and weekend entertainment. You’ll have things happening around camp regularly, though dogs can’t join all activities. The infrastructure is solid, with the full-service lodges meaning you have real bathrooms and kitchens if you go that route instead of tenting.
