San Vicente Mountain Park

San Vicente Mountain Park

San Vicente Mountain Park

17500 Mulholland Dr., Encino, California 90049

San Vicente Mountain Park offers the visitor stunning 360-degree views, access to a large network of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, and picnic areas. The park also provides a glimpse into United States military history. Numerous self-guided interpretive displays explain how from 1956-1968, San Vicente Mountain was one of sixteen Los Angeles area Nike-Ajax supersonic anti-aircraft missile launch sites. During the Cold War, Nike sites were located in defensive rings surrounding key urban and industrial areas throughout the United States.

The original radar tower now provides visitors with spectacular views of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Encino Reservoir and San Fernando Valley, and the Los Angeles Basin. It is one of the region’s premiere locations to watch a Western sunset. The tower itself is worth the hike—standing inside it gives you a real sense of what Cold War surveillance looked like, and the views from the top make the climb feel rewarding.

The trail system here is well-maintained and genuinely scenic. You’ll pass through chaparral and oak woodlands as you gain elevation, and the paths are wide enough to accommodate hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders comfortably. On clearer days, the visibility stretches far enough that you can pick out distant ridges and valleys. The park has several entry points and loop options, so you can adjust the difficulty and distance depending on what you’re in the mood for.

Bring plenty of water—the exposure is real, and there’s not much shade once you’re moving uphill. The trail gets very hot mid-day, so going in the morning or evening makes a genuine difference in your experience. If you time it right for sunset, you’ll understand why this spot has such a loyal following among locals who know the area well. The parking area near the trailhead is usually accessible, though it can fill up on popular weekend days.
