While DogTrekker regularly updates off-leash rules, it is important to check to be sure that this area still allows voice control prior to removing your dog’s leash. Sandy Beach is part of Monte Rio Recreation & Park District. This dog-friendly beach is located west of the Monte Rio Bridge, accessible year-round from the upper parking lot. The narrow paths cutting down to the water can get a bit muddy, especially after rain, so wear shoes with good traction if you’re navigating with your dog.
The beach itself is small but working, with a steady stream of fly-fishers along the Russian River and a boat launch right there for people launching small fishing vessels. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll see a mix of activities happening at once, which means your dog might encounter fishing lines or boats, so keeping good control is important whether or not they’re off-leash.
The real thing to know about Sandy Beach involves the Russian River water quality. Warning signs have been posted after small amounts of toxic blue-green algae were detected in the river. This isn’t necessarily a reason to skip it, but you do need to take precautions. Don’t let your dog drink directly from the river—bring fresh water in a collapsible bowl or bottle so they can stay hydrated safely. If your dog does swim, hose them off afterward when you get home. The algae can irritate their skin and cause problems if ingested.
Leashes are required if your dog isn’t under strict voice control, and you’ll want to pack out anything your dog leaves behind. The narrow beach setup means people are fairly close together, so having reliable recall is genuinely useful here, not just courteous.
