Sardine Lake Resort is a small, family-run business started in 1941, sitting right on Lower Sardine Lake at the base of the Sierra Buttes in the Lakes Basin area of the Tahoe National Forest. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to bring your dog for a week, this place delivers the kind of peace that makes you forget what day it is.
The resort has nine full-housekeeping log cabins ranging from one-room to larger two-bedroom options, and they rent by the week, Saturday to Saturday. Each cabin comes equipped so you can cook your own meals, which is genuinely convenient when you’re traveling with a dog. The setting itself is what makes it special—surrounded by forest, right on the water, with the Buttes looming in the distance. Your dog will have space to move around the property, and the lake access means you’re not far from walking trails and water views.
The Lodge operates daily and handles boat rentals, tackle, and bait if you’re interested in fishing. They serve coffee and cold drinks throughout the day until dinner service begins. If you don’t feel like cooking one night, there’s a dining room in the lake gazebo that opens a full bar at 5 p.m., with dinner seatings at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. by reservation. Keep in mind it’s closed Monday and Tuesday nights, and you’ll want to plan ahead since it’s reservation-only.
This is genuinely backcountry living without being rough. The cabins are comfortable, the lake is clear and beautiful, and there’s enough going on—fishing, boating, hiking—to keep a week interesting. Sierra City itself is a small mountain town with Gold Rush history, so if you venture out from the resort, there’s some exploring to do. The real draw here is the quiet and the water access, especially if your dog enjoys being around lakes.
