Hiking in and around Northstar Resort is a great way to explore the Sierra Nevada mountains with your dog. The Sawmill Trail is a 2.3-mile round trip that starts at the top of the Big Springs Gondola, so you get a scenic ride up before you even hit the trail. From there, you and your dog head southeast past the Vista Chair Lift and Cross Country Center, winding through dense pine forests with wildflowers scattered along the path. The trail is moderately difficult, so it works for dogs with decent stamina but isn’t brutally steep or technical.
The footpath itself is well-maintained and easy to follow. You’ll hear running water in places, and there’s a decent chance of spotting local wildlife if you’re paying attention. Pick up the self-guided nature hike brochure at the trailhead—it actually gives useful context about what you’re seeing in the forest rather than just generic descriptions.
Leashed dogs are welcome on all trails here, which is straightforward. What you should know: bring more water than you think you’ll need, especially in summer when it can get warm even at this elevation. The shade from the pines helps, but there aren’t many spots where your dog can cool off once you’re on the trail. Also, pack bags for cleanup—it’s not negotiable, just the standard responsibility thing.
After you finish, Northstar has some pet-friendly dining options where you can sit with your dog and grab food without having to head back down the mountain immediately. The whole setup works well if you’re staying in the Truckee area and want a solid half-day outing that feels like actual hiking rather than a short walk. The gondola ride alone makes it feel like more of an event than your typical neighborhood trail.
