The Sea Ranch Lodge sits along California’s Sonoma Coast, about an hour north of Bodega Bay, and it’s one of those rare places where the whole property actually welcomes dogs. The lodge itself was rebuilt in 2023 after decades of operation, so you get that mix of solid infrastructure with fresh updates. There are 17 rooms here, and some ground-floor ones allow dogs—no stairs to navigate, which matters when you’re carrying luggage and managing a dog at the same time. There is a refundable deposit plus a nightly fee for dogs, so call ahead about current amounts and availability.
What makes this spot work for traveling with a dog is the actual infrastructure around it. The Sea Ranch community maintains miles of hiking trails through the coastal landscape, and you can get your dog out onto them directly from the property. The trails loop through the area with views of the Pacific, and they’re the kind of place where you can spend a morning without seeing many other people. If you want more structured dog time, there’s a designated off-leash dog park in the community—from Highway One at Mile Marker 56.88, turn east on Deer Trail, park in the first rock driveway on the right, and walk the path east to find it.
The lodge has three food options on-site: The Dining Room for actual meals, The Bar & Lounge, and The Café for quicker bites. The General Store handles supplies if you need anything. Dogs do need to stay leashed everywhere except that designated dog park, and Sonoma County regulations cap leash length at six feet, so plan accordingly.
The main thing to know is that this isn’t a budget option, but it’s genuinely set up for people traveling with dogs rather than simply tolerating them. The combination of ground-floor rooms, immediate trail access, and the dog park makes it actually functional rather than just permissive. Weather along the coast can turn foggy even in summer, so bring layers whether you’re walking or just sitting on your room’s deck.
