Shasta Lake

Shasta Dam Boulevard, Shasta Lake, California

(530) 275-1296

Shasta Lake, California’s largest reservoir, was created by the construction of Shasta Dam. This massive project, which began during the Great Depression and concluded during World War II, resulted in the submergence of five towns. While its primary purpose is water storage, Shasta Lake has developed into a major destination for a wide array of recreational activities, and it’s genuinely dog-friendly in ways that matter.

Fed by the Sacramento, Pitt, and McCloud rivers, the lake has clear waters that warm up nicely for swimming during the summer months. Dogs can swim alongside you without much fuss, and the shoreline is dotted with sandy areas and coves where dogs can splash around and socialize with other dogs. You’ll want to keep an eye on your dog while they explore, as the natural beauty of the area can be quite distracting.

The campgrounds and cabin resorts scattered around the lake welcome dogs routinely, so you’re not scrambling to find pet-friendly lodging. An expansive network of hiking trails surrounds the lake with options ranging from easy walks to more challenging terrain, so you can match the difficulty to your dog’s fitness level and your own preferences.

Water activities extend beyond swimming. Houseboating, waterskiing, and wakeboarding are all popular here, and fishing tournaments run throughout the year if that interests you. After a day of activity, several dining spots nearby have outdoor seating where dogs are welcome while you grab a meal.

The scenery is genuinely worth the trip—the lake sits in a dramatic setting with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest providing a backdrop. Summer is the peak season, so if you’re planning a visit then, expect crowds at the most popular campgrounds and beaches. Spring and fall tend to be quieter, though water temperatures are cooler. The drive from I-5 near Redding puts you right there, making it accessible without too much travel time if you’re coming from northern California or southern Oregon.
