Sherwins trailhead

Sherwin Creek Rd., Mammoth Lakes, California 93546

Leash laws are in effect at the Borrow Pit, but there’s plenty of opportunity for your dog to sniff out new friends and play once you get moving. Park at the Sherwins Trailhead and take the gravel and dirt road that heads west past Kerry Meadow toward the iconic Mammoth Rock. The route opens up into the broad Sherwins Meadow, and you’ll find the landscape shifts as you walk—from forested sections to more open meadow views.

Although you rarely meet vehicles on this road, be aware that cars and bikes are allowed, so keep an eye out and stay to the side when you hear something coming. The road itself is easy on the paws and relatively flat for most of the walk, which makes it manageable even for dogs who aren’t serious hikers. The elevation at Mammoth Lakes means you’ll both feel the altitude a bit if you’re not acclimated, so don’t push too hard on your first visit.

Kerry Meadow is really the sweet spot to stop. When you get there, run sprints with your dog to tire him out—there’s enough space to let them burn some energy safely. The meadow opens up nicely, and you get good views of the surrounding peaks. After your dog’s had a good play session, plop down on the side of the road for a few minutes of relaxation in the shade if you can find some. The calm break helps before heading back to the car, and honestly, it’s a good moment to catch your own breath and take in how quiet it is up here.

The whole walk works well as a half-day trip, especially in summer when the weather cooperates. Bring water for both of you—the elevation and sun exposure add up faster than you’d expect.
