The Smittle Creek Trail in Woodland spans 2.6 miles along Lake Berryessa, running from Smittle Creek Park to Coyote Knolls in Oak Shores Park. It’s the kind of walk where you’ll see Big Island and Small Island sitting just offshore, and the terrain stays gently rolling throughout—nothing steep or technical. Dogs handle it well regardless of size, and the path itself is well-maintained enough that you won’t be picking burrs out of their coat for hours afterward.
Spring and winter are your best bets for this one. The wildflowers come alive in spring, and temperatures stay mild enough that neither you nor your dog will be overheating. Winter brings lush greenery and fewer crowds. Summer can get hot along the water, so if you go then, plan for early morning or late afternoon and bring more water than you think you’ll need—for both of you.
The lake itself is the real draw. During warmer months, there are beach areas where dogs can wade and splash around without much fuss. You’ll usually spot other dogs doing the same, so it’s a decent spot for some casual socializing if your dog’s into that. The water’s clear enough to actually want to jump in, and most dogs won’t need much convincing.
Practical stuff: bring water and dog-friendly snacks for the trail itself. Keep your dog on leash—it’s the right call for everyone using the area. And obviously pick up after them. The trail gets used by hikers, runners, and other dog owners, so it only stays nice if everyone does their part.
The views across the water are genuinely pretty, especially when you’re not rushed. This isn’t a destination where you’re checking off a box; it’s more of a place where you can actually relax for a few hours. The walk from Smittle Creek Park all the way to Oak Shores gives you plenty of distance without feeling like a slog.
