Sonoma Bike Path

Sonoma, Sonoma, California 95476

If you are attracted to the rolling, wine country landscapes and historical architecture of Sonoma Valley, the Sonoma Bike Path won’t disappoint. Located in historic Sonoma, just over an hour from downtown San Francisco, this rail-trail passes scenic vineyards, historic mansions, beautiful parks and an old railroad depot museum.

The path itself is gentle and mostly flat, making it easy to walk with your dog alongside the paved surface. You’ll get a real sense of how the valley looked during its railroad heyday while moving through present-day wine country. The air smells like grapevines and oak, especially during harvest season.

There are two good entry points depending on where you want to start. Access near the historic Sonoma Plaza lets you begin right in town—parking is available at Sebastiani Vineyard and Winery on 4th Street and Lovall Valley Drive. From here, the trail continues for 1.5 miles to Maxwell Farms Regional Park, which has open grass areas where dogs can stretch out after the walk.

If you prefer starting from Maxwell Farms Regional Park, just off State Route 12, you can park there and pick up the trail about a quarter mile down the road on your left after crossing Verona Avenue and turning right on SR 12. This western end of the trail, between a residential area and small Olsen Park, is where many local commuters use the path daily, so it’s well-maintained and clearly marked.

The whole area rewards a leisurely pace. You can explore the depot museum, grab water for your dog at one of the parks, and take in the valley views without the intensity of mountain trails. The combination of history, reasonable terrain, and wine country scenery makes this a solid choice if you’re spending time in Sonoma and want to get outside with your dog without driving somewhere remote.
