South Gate Dog Park

South Gate Dog Park

South Gate Dog Park

5400 Monroe Avenue, South Gate, California 90280

(323) 563-5479

South Gate Dog Park sits within Hollydale Regional Park, a sprawling green space that gives your dog room to actually run. The park occupies several fenced acres with separate sections for small and large dogs, so you’re not watching a 90-pound Lab steamroll a Chihuahua. Grass covers most of the main areas, with some decomposed granite sections that stay reasonably dry even after rain. Trees dot the property for afternoon shade, which matters in the South Gate heat.

Dogs can be off-leash in the designated dog park areas only. The facility has water stations, though bringing your own bowl prevents the inevitable crowding at the shared spouts during peak hours. The park opens early and stays accessible into evening, making it workable before or after work. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than Saturday afternoons, when the place fills with neighborhood regulars and their dogs.

Hollydale Regional Park sits just north of the 105 Freeway near Monroe Avenue, roughly equidistant from Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles. The dog park is one section of a much larger park, so you’ll see families at picnic areas and on the trails beyond the fence line. Parking is straightforward and free. The terrain is flat with good footing, and the space itself is well-maintained by the city parks department. Summer temperatures regularly hit the 80s and 90s, so early mornings or late afternoons are genuinely more comfortable for active play. Most regulars arrive between 7 and 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to avoid the midday heat.
