Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

2605 Adobe Canyon Rd., Kenwood, California 95452

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park sits in Kenwood, about seven miles east of Santa Rosa, where Sonoma Creek cuts through gorges lined with redwoods and releases a 25-foot waterfall after winter rains. It’s the kind of place where you can actually see the landscape change as you move through it—meadows give way to rock outcroppings, then dense forest. Dogs need to stay leashed throughout the park, and they’re not allowed on the main trails, which does limit your options here compared to some other Bay Area parks.

What you can do with your dog is use the self-guided nature trail that runs along Sonoma Creek starting near the picnic area. It’s a straightforward walk where you’ll get close to the water and the shade of the surrounding trees without having to navigate technical terrain. The trail doesn’t go very far, but it’s pleasant for a short outing, especially on a hot day when the creek adds that cooling presence and the redwoods provide good shade coverage.

The picnic area is really the hub of the dog-friendly experience here. It’s a decent spot to spread out, eat lunch, and let your dog rest after the walk. The park sits at a good elevation, so even when it’s warm in Santa Rosa or the valley floor, it’s noticeably cooler up here. Bring water for both of you—the creek is nearby but not always accessible from the picnic spots, and you’ll want to make sure your dog stays hydrated. Pack waste bags too; the park is well-maintained and visitors clearly help keep it that way.

The location itself is convenient if you’re in Sonoma County or willing to drive an hour north from the Bay Area. It’s not a destination where you’ll spend an entire day with your dog, but it works well for a morning or afternoon break. Call ahead about current pet policies before you visit, as regulations can shift seasonally or with park conditions.
