Sunset Beach River Park in Forestville, Sonoma County, sits right along the Russian River and gives you miles of riverbank to explore with your dog. The water access is straightforward here—you can walk down to the river, and if your dog loves swimming, the gentle currents and sandy areas make it a legitimate spot to let them cool off without fighting dangerous rapids. Summer’s the best time, though the river runs year-round.

The park spreads across plenty of open space with several trails that stay relatively close to the water. You’ll see other people fishing during the right seasons, and the riverbanks attract wildlife—herons, egrets, and various water birds—which makes for good watching if you’re into that. The trails themselves are easy to moderate, nothing steep or technical, so you’re not dealing with a strenuous hike.

Parking here is practical. There’s a paved lot with 40 spaces including ADA-accessible spots, plus unpaved overflow if the main lot fills up. That matters on nice weekends when other people have the same idea about getting outside.

What makes this less touristy than some other Russian River access points is that it stays pretty low-key. You’ll encounter other dog owners and families, but it doesn’t feel crowded the way some state parks can get. Bring water for both you and your dog since there aren’t amenities scattered throughout the park itself. Pack waste bags too—the park stays cleaner when everyone carries out what they bring in.

The area around Forestville is quiet, mostly vineyards and rural Sonoma County. Sunset Beach River Park is one of your better options if you want actual river access for your dog without dealing with crowds or complicated rules. Check the park’s conditions before you go, especially if it’s been rainy and the river’s running high.
