Sycamore Grove Park Valley

1051 Wetmore Rd., Livermore, California 94550

In 2015 a trail was added to turn this old, steep ranch road into a rewarding loop trail. Follow directions above but turn left onto Valley View Loop where Wagon Road Trail makes a hairpin turn. Go up the switchbacking single track trail. Take a rest at the bench at the top and enjoy the beautiful view of the Livermore Valley. Head down the steep ranch road and complete Wagon Road Loop. Walking or biking up this trail will work your calves and get your heart pumping!

The Valley View Loop itself is just 1.43 miles, but if you tackle the full suggested route including the upper loop, you’re looking at 4 miles round trip. This is strenuous terrain—expect well-built single track climbing with some genuinely steep sections on the wider dirt ranch road. The elevation gains are real, so pace yourself and bring water.

Your dog will get a serious workout here too, especially if they’re not used to steep terrain. The switchbacks on the way up give you natural stopping points to catch your breath, and that bench at the summit is a genuine relief. The views across the Livermore Valley are wide open—no shade up there, so timing matters in hot weather. Come early on summer days.

The trail works equally well for mountain bikers, and the mix of single track and wider dirt sections keeps things interesting. The steepness means this isn’t ideal for puppies or seniors, but dogs with solid fitness levels will handle it fine. You’ll encounter other hikers and cyclists on weekends, so keep your dog close and be ready to step aside on the narrower sections.

The descent is fast and steep, so watch your dog’s footing on the way down—those back legs take a pounding. The whole experience is genuinely challenging in a way that feels earned when you reach the top, and both you and your dog will sleep well afterward.
