Sycamore Valley Regional Open Space, spread across grasslands and oak savanna south of Mt. Diablo in Danville, is a solid choice for hiking with your dog. The preserve has two main sections—the Sherburne Hills Unit and the Short Ridge Unit—with elevations ranging from about 600 to 1,000 feet, so you’ll get some actual elevation gain without it being brutal.

The Sherburne Hills side is mostly open grassland, while Short Ridge mixes things up with oak savanna dotted with valley oaks, coast live oaks, and buckeyes. The landscape feels genuinely spacious, and the views back toward Mt. Diablo are worth the walk. You’ll likely see California quail, wild turkeys, red-tailed hawks, and great-horned owls if you’re there during the right hours—early morning tends to be quietest.

The trails themselves are straightforward to navigate, winding through the hills without too many confusing junctions. The open terrain means you can usually see ahead pretty clearly, which helps with pacing. During warmer months, bring more water than you think you’ll need—there’s real sun exposure out here, and shade is limited once you’re away from the oak clusters.

The park is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., so you have flexibility for timing your visit around the heat or to catch sunset light. Parking is free. You’ll need to keep your dog on leash and pack out any waste—standard trail etiquette that keeps the place looking good for everyone else using it.

The area isn’t crowded the way some Bay Area parks can be, which makes for a more relaxed experience. Bring a map or download one beforehand since cell service is spotty in spots. If you’re planning a weekend trip, check on current trail conditions first, especially after heavy rain when some sections can get muddy.
