The Lucky Penny Public House sits right in the heart of Murphys, a charming Gold Country town that feels frozen in time. When I visited with my dog, we grabbed a table on their patio where the casual, renovated space struck a nice balance between polished and laid-back. The staff didn’t make a fuss about us being there with a dog—they just brought water and acted like it was normal, which honestly made the whole experience better.
The kitchen takes their ingredient sourcing seriously. Everything on the menu comes from local producers, and you can taste that commitment in how fresh the food actually tastes. I had a really solid burger and my friend’s pasta dish was genuinely well-executed, not the kind of bar food that just fills you up. They also have a solid cocktail program if you’re into that, and they do live music regularly, which adds some energy to the place without being obnoxiously loud.
What makes this spot worth the drive is that they’ve clearly thought about making space for dogs without treating it like some gimmick. The patio is comfortable enough that you’re not just cramming in next to a dumpster or anything. On warmer evenings, the breeze comes through nicely. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax for a couple hours, eat well, have a drink, and let your dog decompress from whatever hiking or exploring you’ve been doing around Calaveras County.
Murphys itself has some excellent nearby trails and that whole historic downtown scene if you want to walk around before or after eating. The Lucky Penny fits naturally into that, not as some tourist trap but as an actual good restaurant that happens to welcome dogs on the patio.
