In the Hollywood Hills, Trebek Open Space offers a sprawling 62-acre expanse adjacent to the Los Angeles City-owned Runyon Canyon Park. This sun-drenched area has a well-established network of fire roads that work well for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The trails wind through the landscape and give you views across Southern California.
For dogs, Trebek is a solid choice if you want more space and fewer crowds than Runyon Canyon gets. The trails are wide enough that your dog can move around freely without feeling hemmed in by other visitors. The terrain is open and mostly exposed, so bring water — there’s not much shade out there, and on warm days the sun hits hard. The ground is mostly packed dirt and fire road, so it’s easy on paws.
You’ll access the park from the Hollywood Freeway (101), exiting on Hollywood Boulevard and heading west into West Hollywood. The entrance isn’t as obvious as Runyon’s, which means it tends to be quieter. That’s the real appeal here. You might see mountain bikers and the occasional horse, but you won’t be dodging crowds of tourists.
The trails connect to other open space areas, so depending on your dog’s fitness level and your energy, you can do anything from a quick 30-minute loop to a more ambitious half-day hike. The vistas of the city and surrounding hills are genuinely nice, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is better and temperatures are cooler.
Bring a full water bottle since there’s no water available on the trails. The parking situation is easier than Runyon, though it does fill up on weekends. If you’re looking for that Hollywood Hills hiking experience without navigating the chaos of the more famous park right next door, this is where to go.
