Turtle Bay Exploration Park

800 Auditorium Drive, Redding, California 96001

Turtle Bay Exploration Park is a sprawling complex in downtown Redding that works well for a day out with your dog, especially if you want to mix some walking with actual sights worth seeing. The centerpiece is the Sundial Bridge, a striking modern structure that spans the Sacramento River—it’s a straightforward walk across with good river views, and dogs on leash handle it fine. The bridge connects to the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, where leashed dogs are welcome to walk through the grounds. The gardens feature native plants and seasonal flowers, so there’s actually something to look at beyond just the paths themselves, and it’s genuinely quiet compared to busier parks.

Beyond the gardens, the Sacramento River Trail and other walking paths branch out along the riverbank, giving you multiple options depending on how long you want to stay. These aren’t manicured park trails—they follow the river pretty directly, so you get a sense of the actual landscape rather than a designed experience. The park is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the botanical garden area, but the bridge and trails are accessible 24/7, which is handy if you prefer quieter times or want to catch sunrise or sunset.

The park also functions as an actual education and exploration center with exhibits and programs, so if you’re visiting with people who want to learn something, there’s content there. It’s not all for dogs—many indoor exhibits don’t allow them—but the outdoor portion is genuinely substantial and worth a few hours.

On warmer days, bring more water than you think you’ll need. The river provides some shade in spots, but long stretches are pretty exposed. The trails aren’t difficult, so this works for older dogs or puppies still building endurance, though you’ll want to gauge based on temperature and your dog’s fitness level. Pick up after your dog, and keep them leashed throughout. The combination of actual architectural interest, botanical gardens, and river trails makes this feel like more than just a dog park—it’s a place where you can have a decent outing yourself while your dog gets exercise.
