The Twenty Lakes Basin trail in the Hoover Wilderness area, just a few miles off Highway 120 on the east side of Tioga Pass, delivers exactly what its name promises. You’ll hike an 8-mile loop with your dog through high alpine terrain dotted with actual lakes you can see from the trail, not just distant views. The landscape shifts between rocky alpine meadows and granite peaks that rise dramatically around you—it’s the kind of scenery that makes you stop frequently just to look around.
To reach the trailhead, head north from Highway 120 on Saddlebag Lake Road. You’ll pass the campground, and the parking area sits at the end of the road near the dam at Saddlebag Lake. The elevation here sits around 10,000 feet, so the altitude is noticeable if you’re coming from lower elevations. Start early in the day since afternoon thunderstorms can roll in quickly at this elevation, and you’ll want to be off exposed ridges before they arrive.
The trail itself is well-maintained and relatively straightforward to follow, though it does have some steep sections. Your dog will encounter stream crossings and plenty of water sources, which is helpful during warm days. The alpine lakes along the route are genuinely cold, even in summer, so if your dog enjoys swimming, they’ll get invigorating dips rather than leisurely ones.
One important thing: if you’re planning an overnight trip, you’ll need a wilderness permit beforehand. Day hikes don’t require one, but overnight campers in the Hoover Wilderness must secure a permit in advance. The trailhead can get moderately busy on weekends, so a weekday visit gives you more solitude to enjoy the granite peaks and lake views.
