Twin Lakes Campground sits at 8,600 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada, right where you can see Mammoth Mountain’s snowy peaks rising to 11,059 feet across the water. The campground sprawls across both sides of Twin Lakes with three separate sections—Sections 1 and 2 hug the western shore closest to the water, while Section 3 sits higher up on a hill overlooking everything. The lodgepole pines scattered throughout provide decent shade without feeling cramped, and each site has a picnic table and campfire ring.
Your dog will appreciate the setting immediately. The forests here harbor mule deer, pine marten, and pika, and there’s genuine wildlife to watch (though you’ll want to keep your dog close at night since black bears and mountain lions roam the area). A cascading waterfall actually flows into one of the lakes, which creates a nice focal point and the sound of water in camp.
The practical setup works well for a dog-friendly stay. Flush toilets and drinking water are distributed throughout the campground. There’s a general store on-site where you can grab boat rentals, camping supplies, and access to showers—helpful after dusty hiking days. From here, you’re positioned for serious exploration: fishing and boating on the lakes themselves, multiple nearby hiking trails, and easy access to Mammoth Lakes’ restaurants and shops just a short drive away.
Being at elevation means the weather can shift quickly, and it gets cold at night even in summer. The campground fills up during peak season, so showing up midweek increases your chances of scoring a spot. Two dogs are allowed per site as long as they’re leashed, which makes sense given the bear and mountain lion activity. The waterfall provides a natural gathering spot at dusk when the light hits it just right.
