Valley Hills Obedience Club has been training dogs in the San Fernando Valley since 1952, and it’s the only AKC-licensed obedience club in the area. Walking onto their training grounds at Canoga Park Lutheran Church on Jordan Avenue, you’ll find a serious but welcoming setup where handlers of all experience levels work with their dogs.
The club offers instruction across several canine sports—agility, obedience, rally, and nose work—with classes structured for different skill levels. Whether your dog is just learning basic manners or you’re working toward competition titles, there’s likely a class that fits where you’re at. All the instructors have real experience competing in these sports themselves, which makes a difference when you’re trying to understand what works and what doesn’t.
What sets VHOC apart is that they balance serious training with community access. They run low-cost pet classes for people who want basic training without the competitive sports focus. The group classes form the backbone of what they do, but the club also opens its training site to members on Tuesday through Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., so you can practice on your own time between lessons.
The instructors here aren’t just teaching—they’re actively involved in canine performance sports, so they know the difference between a dog that sits on command and one that’s actually ready to compete. That said, they’re equally comfortable working with someone who just wants their dog to have better impulse control on walks. As a member of the Southern California Dog Obedience Council, they’re connected to a wider network of clubs and trainers across the region. If you’re in the San Fernando Valley and looking for training beyond basic puppy classes, this is where most people end up.
