Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos spans 152 acres and draws locals year-round for a mix of lake access, open fields, and tree-lined trails. The 45 acres of lawn here actually gets used — you’ll see people throwing frisbees, playing softball, and setting up picnics on weekends. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a few hours and feel like you’ve actually gotten outside instead of just checked a box.
The dog situation is what makes this park stand out locally. There’s an off-leash area where dogs can run around without the constant leash-checking you do everywhere else. My dog appreciated the space to actually gallop and interact with other dogs without tension on the line. The area has enough room that it doesn’t feel cramped even when it’s moderately busy, which matters when you’re trying to let your dog burn energy.
Beyond the open fields, Vasona Lake has trails that loop around the water. They’re not strenuous or particularly long, but they’re pleasant — shade from oak and bay trees, the actual lake to look at, and enough elevation change to keep things interesting. The trails do get muddy after rain, so if your dog is the type that loves to roll, plan accordingly.
The park connects to a larger parkway system, so if you want to extend your visit, there are options. Parking is straightforward, and the main lots fill up on weekend mornings, especially on warm days when families show up early. The park itself stays open year-round, which means you can visit whenever you want without worrying about seasonal closures.
