Ventana Campground sits in a beautiful 40-acre canyon filled with old-growth redwoods on California’s Central Coast, about halfway between Carmel and San Simeon on Highway 1. The campground offers tent camping only, with no RV sites, which means it stays quieter and more intimate than you’d find at many other Big Sur options.
What makes this place special is how thoughtfully it’s been laid out. All the tent sites follow the natural contours of the canyon and Post Creek without disrupting the landscape. Some sites require a short hike to reach, while others let you park right next to your tent. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring. The three modern bathhouses with hot showers are a genuine comfort when you’re camping in the redwoods—hot water feels especially good after a chilly coastal evening.
The location gives you convenient access to what little commercial activity exists in Big Sur. General stores, restaurants, cafes, gift shops, delis, and taverns are all nearby, so you’re not completely isolated if you need supplies or a meal out. Being 30 miles south of Carmel and 65 miles north of Hearst Castle means you could use this as a base for exploring the wider Big Sur area without feeling like you’re camping in the middle of nowhere.
Dogs need to follow a few clear rules here: they must stay quiet, remain on leash at all times, and can only be in campsites or on the roads—not wandering off into the canyon. You’ll need to clean up after your dog, and leaving them unattended in your site isn’t allowed. These rules actually work in everyone’s favor, keeping the campground peaceful for all guests and protecting the natural environment. If your dog is comfortable with structure and you’re okay with short walks on designated paths, this is a solid choice for a redwood camping trip.
