Washington Park in Alameda sprawls across 14.71 acres with something genuinely useful for dogs: a dedicated 5.70-acre off-leash area where they can actually run and play without restriction. The fenced dog park is well-maintained and gets regular use, so your dog will have plenty of other dogs to interact with if that’s what they enjoy. The space is big enough that even on busy days it doesn’t feel cramped, and the mature trees scattered throughout provide actual shade rather than just open field.
Beyond the dog park itself, the wider park works well for longer walks. The paths are in good condition and wind through planted areas, though it’s not densely wooded—you get tree coverage but can still see what’s happening around you. The grassy open areas are genuinely spacious, so if you want to throw a ball around or just let your dog wander and sniff, there’s plenty of room without feeling like you’re crossing into someone’s soccer game.
Bring water with you since the dog park doesn’t have a dedicated water station that I noticed. Picnic areas are available, which makes sense if you’re planning to spend several hours here. The park also has baseball, softball, soccer, and tennis facilities, so you might find yourself sharing space with organized sports, though the dog areas are separate enough that it’s not usually an issue.
One thing worth noting: it’s a fairly straightforward park without a lot of elaborate features. No creek to wade in, no hills for conditioning work, no special dog play structures. What you get is solid open space for running and walking, which is exactly what many dogs need and what many owners are looking for. It’s practical rather than elaborate, which tends to mean fewer crowds and less chaos than some of the more “famous” dog parks around the Bay Area.
