Whiskeytown Lake

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Redding, Whiskeytown, California 96095

Whiskeytown Lake in Redding, Shasta County, is a 5-square-mile reservoir formed by the Whiskeytown Dam on Clear Creek that welcomes dogs throughout its 40 miles of forested shoreline. The lake sits in the Shasta Cascade region and offers plenty of room to explore with your dog without feeling crowded, especially if you venture out on weekday mornings.

The main draw here is the water access. Several boat launch areas around the lake let you take your dog out on the water if you have a boat or rent one nearby. The shoreline itself has multiple access points where you can pull over and walk your dog along the water’s edge. The forest coverage provides good shade during hot summer months, which matters when you’re spending hours outside in the Redding heat. The terrain varies from sandy spots where dogs can wade into the shallows to rocky areas that offer more stable footing.

Clear Creek flows into the lake, and if your dog enjoys creek water, there are spots where the creek is easily accessible before it widens into the larger reservoir. The landscape here is genuinely beautiful — ponderosa pine and oak forest backing the water, and views across to the dam are worth the drive alone.

Parking is available at several developed areas around the lake, and the National Recreation Area designation means the space is managed for public use. Peak season is summer weekends, so if you want a quieter experience with your dog, plan for early morning or shoulder seasons like May or September when the water is still pleasant but crowds thin out. Bring plenty of water for your dog since the hike distances can be deceptive in the heat, and the lake water isn’t always ideal for drinking. There’s also a visitor center near the dam entrance if you want more information about current conditions or specific trail recommendations.
