Whitney Canyon

20303 Newhall Ave., Newhall, California 91321

Whitney Canyon spreads across 442 acres in Santa Clarita, just off the 14 Freeway near San Fernando Road, offering plenty of room to explore with your dog. The park sits within the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor, a network of connected open spaces that gives you options for longer adventures if you’re up for it.

The terrain here is genuinely varied. You’ll walk through coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, and chaparral, with riparian corridors running through lower sections where things stay a bit greener. The trails themselves are well-maintained and clearly marked, which matters when you’re trying to keep an eye on your dog while also enjoying the landscape. The mix of habitats means you might spot different wildlife depending on which trails you take—lizards in the scrubby areas, birds in the oak groves, and sometimes mule deer if you’re out early enough.

Dogs are allowed on the trails throughout the park, which is the main draw for most visitors I’ve run into there. It’s not crowded in the way some closer-to-the-city parks are, so you get genuine quiet and space. The elevation changes are gradual on most routes rather than relentlessly steep, making it accessible whether you’re dealing with an older dog or a high-energy younger one that needs several miles.

Parking is straightforward—pull in from San Fernando Road side and you’re ready to go. Bring water for yourself and your dog, especially on warmer days when the sun exposure picks up on the more open trail sections. The park doesn’t have shade structures scattered throughout, so morning or late afternoon hikes feel more comfortable most of the year. Late fall and winter are particularly nice here when the chaparral isn’t radiating heat back at you.
