Yuba Pass SNO-Park sits on the south side of Highway 49 at Yuba Pass in the Sierra Nevada, and it’s one of those places where winter actually becomes an advantage for getting outside with your dog. The park opens seasonally from November 1st through May 30th, and snow conditions here are usually solid enough to make the drive worthwhile.

The main draw is cross-country skiing, but dog sledding and snow play are equally good reasons to visit. If you’ve got a dog with decent winter tolerance, the open snowy terrain gives them room to roam in a way summer trails don’t always allow. There are also snowmobile trails on both sides of Highway 49 if that’s your thing, though you’ll want to coordinate timing with other visitors.

The SNO-Park program manages this and similar sites throughout the Sierra Nevada, and each one provides the basics—plowed parking lots and sanitation facilities—so you’re not completely roughing it. You can identify SNO-Parks along highways by their distinctive brown signs, which makes finding them straightforward.

One practical thing: you’ll need to purchase and display a parking permit for your vehicle. Day passes cost $15, or you can get a season permit for $40 if you think you’ll make multiple trips. Accessibility varies depending on how much snow has fallen and how conditions have settled, so snow depth and stability aren’t guaranteed every day.

The location near Calpine puts you in genuine Sierra Nevada snow country rather than at some lower elevation compromise spot. Bring water for your dog and check conditions before heading up—winter roads can shift quickly, and you want to make sure the parking area is actually accessible when you arrive. The high elevation means cold but typically reliable snow, which makes dog-friendly winter recreation actually doable here.
