Big Bear Lake boasts 300 days of sunshine and dark nights perfect for stargazing, but that’s just the start. This mountain jewel in the San Bernardino National Forest also has great fishing, boating and water activities, hiking and biking trails, and 22 miles of tranquil shoreline to explore. Several dog-friendly hotels and dining patios warmly welcome families.
Big Bear Lake’s alpine waters set the stage for memorable summer activities. Get the lay of this Southern California lake on the Big Bear Queen, which departs from Pine Knot Marina. Leashed dogs are welcome on 90-minute narrated tours showcasing local history and topography. Pups can board Big Bear Cruzer tours out of Big Bear Marina, which has pontoon, paddleboard and jet ski rentals. Holloway’s, Captain John’s and other marinas also rent kayaks, fishing boats and equipment for two- and four-legged family members.
Swing by the meadow near Stanfield Cutoff to dip paws in the water. Then, leash up to stroll the Alpine Pedal Path circling the lake. To access more challenging hiking trails, hop on the free Big Bear Trolley to Trails service that connects popular trailheads with locations around the lake. Operating on weekends from May through early October, it accommodates well-behaved pets and service animals on leashes or in carriers.
When it’s time to play fetch, several bark parks in and around Big Bear offer room to run. Chat with locals while enjoying playgrounds at Meadow Park, Sugarloaf Park or Erwin Ranch. At night, relax at the Fireside Lodge or one of many cozy rental cabins that embrace furry friends. Remember to always confirm pet fees and policies ahead of a trip.
