Dogs get star treatment at the Little River Inn

Plenty of hotels permit dogs. Little River Inn has 80 years of hospitality history with a penchant for pups. Treats appear at check-in, fireplaces glow in ocean-view rooms and five heated cabanas let the whole pack dine together above the Pacific. The Water Dog Package bundles the best of it through September 30.

Built in 1853 by Silas Coombs, the inn’s house came first, and the family never left. Ole hung out the inn sign in 1939, and today fifth-generation innkeeper Cally Coombs Dym runs the place with a philosophy her guests’ dogs figured out long ago: this is their vacation too. Your pup clears check-in with a haul of treats, towels and bowls, plus a property map flagging the best walking routes—because after eight decades of canine guests, this staff knows what questions you’ll ask before you ask them.

Pet-friendly rooms climb from ocean-view quarters with gas fireplaces to garden suites and stand-alone cottages. Then there’s dinner, which no longer requires choosing between your dog and a hot meal: five heated dining pup cabanas, painted a cheerful blue and reserved for inn guests, serve the same menu as the main dining room—think local rock cod or fish and chips in crisp beer batter—delivered tableside while your co-pilot dozes at your feet.

Ready to book? The Water Dog Package includes:

  • Two nights in a pet-friendly Ocean View Gas Fireplace Room (pet fee separate)
  • Your pick of the sea cave kayak tour or the Big River outrigger
  • A $120 dinner voucher to spend in the cabanas, on room service or in the main dining room or bar (humans only)
  • A goodie bag stocked with treats and a cheat sheet on where to hike, bike and boat with dogs.

The seasonal package runs May 1 through September 30, and the inn needs at least three days’ notice to line up your paddle with the outfitter, tides and weather. Reserve at littleriverinn.com or call 888.INN.LOVE (707.937.5942).

Pro tip: August fills fast and September is the coast at its finest—but if autumn gets the jump on you, take heart: the welcome mat here never comes in for the season.
