If you’re new to Redding and the eight-county UpState CA region, start at the Shasta Cascade Welcome Center that’s just down the road in Anderson. Open daily and packed with free maps, brochures, exhibits, geocaching guidance, gifts and even a waterfall pond with wild trout, it’s your gateway to the area’s experiences. Redding’s most recognized architectural landmark is the Sundial Bridge that spans the Sacramento River. It’s part of a paved, pup-friendly, trail leading to the Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake. You can hike or bike the whole way, drive over and picnic, or go houseboating here on California’s largest reservoir.
DogTrekkers also love Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, where Whiskeytown Falls tumbles 220 feet during the rainy season. Even when it’s dry, the park’s 3,500-acre lake is great for kayaking, paddle-boarding and boating.
For a more low-key outing with your dog, explore 20 acres of flowers and herbs at the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Feeling thirsty? Visit the wineries clustered between Redding and Oroville, or order an ale. Fall River and Final Draft are among the local breweries that welcome well-behaved four-legged friends.
