When you and your dog want a dose of adventure, head out on one of the dog-friendly trails in Greater Palm Springs. From no-sweat nature hikes to exhilarating uphill climbs, there’s plenty to explore in this sun-soaked desert destination with its vast network of trails weaving through canyons, foothills, and mountains. Here are five hiking trails that will have you both bounding with enthusiasm on your next outdoor outing.
A moderate 5.3-mile trek, this dog-friendly trail twists through fascinating geographic formations along the infamous San Andreas Fault — from badlands through narrow slot canyons and sandy washes — before rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the entire Coachella Valley. The terrain is varied and keeps things interesting for both you and your dog, so bring plenty of water and watch for loose footing in the sandy stretches.
Visitors and locals alike frequent this well-marked trail at the top of La Quinta Cove in the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains. With only a 390-foot elevation gain, it’s perfect for all levels of hikers. The trail offers great views of the valley below, and early mornings are ideal for beating the heat while your pup still has energy to spare.
Named after a large lizard, this popular 2.1-mile trail loops along the lower perimeter near Rancho Mirage City Hall. It’s a local favorite at dawn for spectacular sunrise views. The well-maintained path makes it a solid pick for a quick morning walk before the desert heats up, and there’s enough room on the trail to comfortably share with other hikers and their dogs.
Whitewater Preserve to Red Dome
Not exactly up for the 2,650-mile trek along the renowned Pacific Crest Trail? You and your pup can enjoy three miles of the PCT in beautiful Whitewater Canyon, where a 20-foot tall hill of brick red volcanic mud marks the turnaround point. The canyon is gorgeous year-round, and the sound of the Whitewater River rushing nearby makes it one of the more scenic stretches you’ll find in the desert.
Although it begins in a Palm Springs residential area and only the first mile or so of Araby is dog-friendly, this uphill trek offers fantastic views and a landscape packed with trees, cacti, boulders and wildflowers. It’s a solid workout with a big payoff — on a clear day, you can see across the valley to the mountains beyond. Just keep your dog leashed and bring water, as the exposed trail heats up fast.
Tips for Hitting the Trail with Your Dog
Desert hiking with dogs calls for a little extra planning. Start early to avoid peak heat, carry at least two liters of water (plus a collapsible bowl for your pup), and check the ground temperature before heading out — if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paw pads. Most trails in the Greater Palm Springs area require leashes, so come prepared. For more, see our desert hiking safety tips.
