Hit the water on spectacular Lake Siskiyou

Lake Siskiyou is strikingly beautiful, incredibly dog-friendly and delightfully under the radar. Set among the waterfalls and wilderness of northwestern California, near the Oregon border, it’s especially inviting in the summer. On relaxing Lake Siskiyou days, you might swim at the foot of Mt. Shasta, loop around lakefront trails, or sip lagers on a patio with your pup.

Set about two miles from Mount Shasta, Lake Siskiyou spans 430 acres and features clear water that hovers around 70 degrees in the summer. Swimmers love this reservoir, and leashed pups are welcome to splash together with their people.

Motorized boats are not allowed on the lake, so it’s a peaceful place to kayak, paddle or fish for smallmouth bass and several species of trout. The 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop follows a mostly flat track around the water. Some sections are nicely shaded, and it’s a popular route for hikers with four paws.

While visiting, base yourself at the family-friendly Mount Shasta Resort. The resort recently expanded its selection of dog-friendly cabins, and many have lake views. Accommodations also come with comforts like fireplaces, private patios, and spacious living and kitchen areas. The property’s 18-hole golf course promises sweeping mountain views and three sets of tees for various skill levels.

Area boat docks, hiking trails and outdoor activities are conveniently close to the Mount Shasta Resort. In nearby Mount Shasta, Bistro 107 has a wrap-around patio where dogs can dine. Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen and Mount Shasta Craft House also welcome pups with water bowls and treats.
