Putah Canyon Campground: Dog-friendly camping on Lake Berryessa

Waterfront campsites and mellow lakeshore exploring

Putah Canyon Campground on Lake Berryessa’s quieter west side offers a low-key, scenic base for a dog-friendly trip. If you’re looking for relaxed camping with your pup—simple amenities, lakeshore wandering and easy mornings—this is an excellent fit.

Campsites stretch along Berryessa’s broad shoreline, giving many sites a view of the lake or direct water access. Dogs must be leashed, but the long, open shoreline and gentle terrain offer room for slow rambles. Mornings are especially beautiful, with still water and soft light filtering over the hills.

Dogs aren’t allowed in official swim areas, but informal access points dot the shoreline. Most are shallow, calm and safe for dogs to cool their paws. Summer temperatures rise quickly, so shade and extra water are essential. A pop-up canopy or reflective tarp can make a big difference.

Facilities are basic—vault toilets, picnic tables and fire rings—but the setting more than makes up for simplicity. This is a place for quiet evenings, starry skies and slow mornings, all of which dogs tend to appreciate more than we do. Bring what you need, settle in and enjoy the stillness.

Wildlife is common around the lake. You may spot deer at dawn or a heron stalking the shallows. Keep your dog close around fishermen; hooks and lines can be hazardous. The wide-open spaces and lake breezes create a peaceful setting most dogs respond well to.

Fall is arguably the best time to visit: comfortable temperatures, lighter crowds and steady water access. Spring is also pleasant, with green hills and active wildlife. Winter can be chilly but quiet and beautiful.

Putah Canyon is not a luxury campground, and that’s exactly the point. It’s an unfussy, scenic place where you and your dog can unwind, explore the lakeshore and enjoy a calm weekend outside.
