“Earth Day is every day,” as the old saying goes, and the DogTrekker team takes that idea seriously. We invite you to follow our Leave Only Paw Prints® values as you discover eco-friendly destinations around California. Start with these five tips for keeping dogs safe as you explore, and help us protect Sierra streams, redwood groves, beaches and parks along the way.
1. Plan ahead for paws-itive adventures. Good trips start with purposeful packing and planning. Research trail and lodging rules before traveling. Watch the weather forecast. Always bring a leash, waste bags, water, snacks, ID tags and a first aid kit for pups.
2. Respect wild lands and wildlife. California’s dog-friendly beachfront and backcountry are delicate. Protect nesting areas, native plants and rare species by keeping your pup on marked trails. Watch wildlife from a safe distance.
3. Be courteous. Hiking with your dog is a great way to make friends on the trail, but not everyone is comfortable around four-legged companions. Follow all leash rules and yield to other hikers. Keep dogs from barking excessively, jumping or getting a little too curious. Encouraging good behavior helps preserve park access for all pups.
4. Pick up and pack out, wherever you roam. Pet waste spreads disease and pollutes parks, trails, and waterways. Encountering trailside surprises can ruin other travelers’ experiences, too. Always carry waste bags, and pack them out when bins aren’t available.
5. Support dog-centric stops that practice environmental stewardship. Many hotels, attractions, cafes, wineries and breweries beloved by DogTrekker readers embrace sustainability. Your support keeps them going strong and strengthens communities in every corner of California.
