Tuolumne County is the heart of California Gold Country, and to get a feel for it, you and your family will want to visit both Columbia State Historic Park, with its living history attractions, and just six miles away, the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. The steam train and water tower, featured in many Hollywood movies and TV shows, is a centerpiece in what is known as the Movie Railroad.

Also, further south in the Gold Country, you will discover the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad.

A unique heritage and Hollywood ties define Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, where vintage tracks are known as the “Movie Railroad.” Some DogTrekkers will recognize the iconic steam train and water tower from the opening of the 1960s TV show “Petticoat Junction,” or from one of 200+ other movies and television shows filmed at the park. Visitors with dogs are allowed on the grounds and open observation cars.

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is another memory maker. As the name implies, it’s just outside Yosemite National Park. Narrated, dog-friendly rides on Logger Steam Trains are on the calendar, with dinner trains, jazz trains and other special events also on offer.

Choose a train pulled by a Shay steam locomotive built in the early 20th century for lumber operations, or opt for a “Model A”-powered ride behind a Jenny railcar. Either way, you’ll enjoy exhibits, picnic grounds and hiking in the area. Leashed dogs not shy of loud noise are welcome on daytime but not dinner or moonlight excursions.
