For small-town friendliness and a big, wildly beautiful backyard, base yourself in Bishop. This Eastern Sierra community is a spectacular starting point for exploring Owens Valley public lands and wading in the Owens River.

For more splash-season excitement – and cooler temps on hot days – head up to Lake Sabrina. Follow tranquil shoreline trails before hopping aboard a dog-friendly rental pontoon or motorboat.

Lake Sabrina sits at 9,100 feet, about 20 miles southwest of Bishop. Pick up rental vessels at Lake Sabrina Boat Landing. Dogs must be leashed here, but they’re welcome to board watercraft and discover the lake with their people.

Pontoons and motorboats accommodate between four and six guests, depending on boat size, plus pups. You can also check out tandem kayaks, paddleboards and canoes for day use.

After adventuring, return to pedestrian-friendly Bishop for dog parks, dining patios and hotels that roll out the red carpet for two- and four-legged travelers. The community sits in a rugged region known for striking mountains, sprawling rift valleys, glacial canyons and mild weather.

This sunny corner of California dazzles all year long, but especially when spring wildflowers or fall leaves blanket the landscape in saturated color. Clear night skies set the stage for stargazing, and local public lands offer best-in-show hiking, climbing, fishing, floating and road trip opportunities.

Get travel recommendations from dog-loving locals at the Bishop Dog Park, which has fully fenced play areas, water stations, tennis balls to catch, and tree-shaded benches for human guests. It’s a short walk from there to downtown, where Erick Schat’s Bakkery serves dog treats along with breakfast sandwiches, pastries, pot pies and other tasty items. Places like Upper Crust Pizza and Mountain Rambler Brewery have pup-friendly patios, and you’ll find other cafes, shops and galleries along Main Street

When it’s time to put heads to the pillows, choose from the 16 of Bishop’s 21 hotels and motels that welcome dogs. Many properties are recently remodeled, providing an extra-comfortable experience. Enjoy a more leisurely pace and greater availability when you and your canine companion settle in for a comfortable, pet-friendly week in downtown Bishop. Discover midweek deals and give your dog the gift of extra room to explore!
