The Bizz Johnson Trail is a 25.4-mile route that follows an old railroad grade from Susanville to Mason Station, making it one of the best dog-hiking options in Lassen County. The trail traces the historic Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific railroad, which means it’s relatively gentle compared to typical mountain trails—something your dog’s paws will appreciate.

For the first 16 miles, you’ll walk alongside the Susan River through its scenic canyon. The trail crosses the river twelve times via charming bridges and trestles, and there are two tunnels that add some real character to the hike. The canyon itself is dramatic, with semi-arid sections giving way to lush upland forests of pine and fir. In spring, wildflowers line the route; summer provides shaded spots to rest and cool off; autumn turns the landscape brilliant with color; and winter transforms it into something quiet and peaceful if you’re up for snowshoeing with your dog.

The trail’s high elevation means weather changes seasonally, so pack layers. More importantly, bring plenty of water and snacks for both of you—there aren’t facilities scattered along the way. Keep your dog leashed throughout, especially in areas where you might encounter wildlife. The relatively flat grade makes it manageable for dogs of varying fitness levels, though the full 25.4 miles is more suited to dogs used to longer outings.

If you’re starting from the Susanville end, you’ll have easy access to town amenities before and after your hike. The Westwood trailhead at the opposite end has parking and a distinctive 25-foot carved redwood Paul Bunyan statue that’s hard to miss. Most people do an out-and-back section rather than the entire length, which works perfectly fine depending on how far you and your dog want to go that day. Bring a headlamp if you’re hiking into the tunnels—they’re cool but dark inside.
