Fallen Leaf Lake Trail, the second-largest lake in the Tahoe Basin, is a straightforward destination for a day hike with your dog. Getting there is easy—drive north on Highway 89 from the South Lake Tahoe “Y” and turn left onto Fallen Leaf Lake Road, following it past the campground to the trailhead.
The trail itself is mostly flat and hugs the shoreline for about 3.5 miles, making it manageable for dogs of varying fitness levels. You’re looking at a leisurely walk rather than a strenuous climb, which means most dogs can handle the full loop or you can turn back whenever. The views of the water stay with you the whole way, and in fall the aspens along the route turn brilliant gold and orange—a worthwhile time to visit if you’re in the area.
Keep in mind that your dog needs to stay leashed and under voice control throughout. The trail sees regular foot traffic and shares the area with local wildlife, so this matters for everyone’s safety. Water is important to bring plenty of—both for you and your dog, especially on warmer days. The trail can feel longer than it sounds in the midday sun without shade breaks.
Winter transforms this into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing area, which is great to know if you’re planning a return trip in snow. You’ll need a Sno-Park permit if you go that route. There’s a small store right next to the parking lot where you can grab snacks and supplies before or after your hike, so you’re not stuck without options if you forgot something. The combination of easy terrain, water views, and reasonable distance makes this a practical choice when you want a solid outing without overcommitting your dog to a strenuous hike.
